If the idea of speeding over the ocean attached to a huge kite half flying half surfing appeals to the adrenalin junkie in you then kite surfing is just what the doctor ordered. Kite surfing a dynamic blend of surfing wakeboarding and power kiting is one of the most extreme water sports out there. It is an adrenalin sport which quite literally takes windsurfing to new heights and opens up a new range of thrills and tricks with experienced surfers performing heartstopping stunts at the end of massive windfilled kites.
The secluded Walvis Bay lagoon in Namibia is a haven for beginners wishing to learn this relatively new sport yet it is reputed for being one of the worlds top three speed spots. With light morning winds and stronger winds in the afternoon the lagoon offers a whole range of conditions allowing the beginner to take on more wind as his skill and confidence increases.
Walvis Bay Namibia is also home of the annual Speed Week a competition to see who is the fastest over 500m and more recently the Nautical Mile. This event has attracted some of the biggest names in both kite surfing as well as windsurfing; these include Dirk Hanel and Bj?Dunkerbeck as well as Olaf Marting a local who currently holds the world speed record for kite boarding.
Accommodation for these dare devils can be found at the FreeAir Kite Centre. What started out as a good idea in a rented house; has now developed into an efficient activity centre with bedandbreakfast accommodation for 24 guests. There is a coffee bar a surf shop a wellstocked equipment room and fullylicensed bar. Situated on the waterfront at the Lagoon there is no better place to stay than ten meters from your board and fifty meters form the water. The renowned breakfast room overlooks the Lagoon and provides shelter from the wind for onlookers and is the best place to enjoy a frothy cappuccino in the afternoon.
With more and more overseas visitors discovering the unique and unspoilt delights of Namibia you may have well decided that it is time for you to take your next holiday in this beautiful country of wide expanses and endless horizons. And if you have a taste for adventure activities of the extreme sort the Namibian coast with it sunny climate has so much to offer that the Walvis Bay and Swakopmund area has been nicknamed the Adventure Oasis of Namibia.
