Ghost Military Town In Chernobyl Exclusion Zone

Ghost Military Town In Chernobyl Exclusion Zone

Chernobyl2. Military Facility in the shadow of Chernobyl.

Information about the unique once secret facility Beyondthehorizon radar station established in the city of Chernobyl2

The city Chernobyl2 is located northwest of the small town of Chernobyl in Polissia region of Ukraine but it is impossible to find on any topographical map. Exploring the maps you are likely to find a symbol for a children’s boarding house or a dotted line of forest roads on a place of accommodation of the town but no reference to urban and technical buildings. In the USSR they were able to hide a secret even more so if it was a military secret.

Military top secret radar Chernobyl2

Only due to the collapse of the Soviet Union and the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant did it become known of the existence of a small town military garrison in the Polissia woods which was engaged … in “space espionage.” In the seventies of the last century were created unique military radar systems to track ballistic missile launches from the territories or military bases and submarines of the likely opponent. The created radar system was named Overthehorizon radar station Duga1. With its enormous size and receiving antenna masts Duga1 demanded a large human resource approximately 1000 people worked on the military alert status at the site. For the militarmen and their families a small town with one street was built named Kurchatov.
In the map below one can see the urban infrastructure.

The urban infrastructure of secret radar system in Chernobyl2
The layout of the Chernobyl2 city infrastructure prepared on the basis of site imagery and wikimapia.org.en wikipedia.org.

The decision to create the Overthehorizon radar station Duga1 near the Chernobyl was made under government orders dated January 18 1972 and April 14 1975
By 1976 the main radar site Chernobyl2 was built. The general designer of the radar station in Chernobyl2 was the Research Institute for longdistance radio communication NIIDAR. Chief Designer and inspiration of the ideas for Duga1 was Franz Kuzminsky.
The first tests of the radar by the State Commission occurred in 1979. As experts “… during preparations for the tests it was necessary to solve some practical problems caused by circumstances of something absolutely new and unique not having analogies in the world means …”
According to some sources “… during the tests carried out to detect the launch of ballistic missiles and rocket carrier at Eastern U.S. missile test sites checked the adequacy of models on the results of detection of associated launches of ballistic missiles and missile carriers of the U.S. which confirmed the correctness of the chosen model representations.”
However shortcomings were found and the system had a lack of quality and single definition of goals and objectives for small groups. The hightquality radar station work achieved only conditions for the massive strikes of ballistic missiles of the likely opponent.
Despite some functional limitations in 1982 according to the Resolution of the Government on May 31 1982 Chernobyl2 was accepted into a trial operation. On the occasion of the acceptance into operation of the radar “Duga” socalled military station in Chernobyl2 the developers of the complex received state awards VN Vasenev BM Danilov NF Dubrovsky Y. Krokunov etc.
Together with the radar station in Chernobyl the USSR created two similar systems in the cities of Nikolayev and KomsomolskonAmur. In the map from space you can see how these Duga1 facilities were controlled.

Duga1 in Chernobyl2
Radars cover territory Duga1 Chernobyl2 and Nikolaev and Duga2 KomsomolsknaAmure

With the beginning of operations at these complexes additional problems occurred. It turns out that part of the working frequency range of the radar systems coincided with systems of civil aviation and the fishing fleets from European countries. The USSR received an official appeal from Western countries that the establishment of this system significantly affects the safety of aviation and maritime navigation.
The USSR conceded and stopped using the working frequency. Immediately before this the designers were asked to address the deficiencies of the radar. Scientists and designers solved the problem and after modernization the system started again in 1985.
After the Chernobyl accident in 1986 the radar was removed from alert status and equipment was disabled. Military and civilians were evacuated from the zone of radioactive contamination. When the USSR and the military leadership had understood the extent of environmental disaster it was decided in 1987 to export the valuable equipment and systems to the city of Komsomolsk.
So the unique facility providing a space shield over the Soviet state ceased operation and the city and urban infrastructure has been neglected and abandoned.

Getting The Most Out Of Your Algarve Holiday

Posted by admin in Articles on 03 27th, 2011 | No Comments

Getting The Most Out Of Your Algarve Holiday

For some people a holiday on the Algarve conjures up images of crowded beaches high rise apartment blocks and noisy nightlife. While this may be true of some parts of the coast in summer time nothing could be further from the reality of rural Algarve. Pretty white washed villages orange groves vineyards ancient olive trees relaxation tranquility interesting towns local handicrafts a window to a way of life that has changed little in centuries. Visitors to rural Algarve discover rolling hills rivers and lakesforest and farm land. And for those who also enjoy some time on the beach from most parts of rural Algarvethe coast is actually only an easy drive away. And what about accommodation? Algarve Bed and breakfast or guest house accommodation is the ideal solution for travellers who wish to discover the ‘real Portugal’. Usually located in quiet pretty settings bed and breakfast guests have the added benefit of the owners local knowledge. In this way many satisfied bed and breakfast or guesthouse travellers have discovered treasures and gems missed out by the average tourist.

One of the biggest attractions of the Algarve is of course the weather. With over 3ooo hours of sunshine per year and up to 6 hours on the average winter day the Algarve is the ideal location for a winter break. The Algarve’s summer climate is well known long hot sunny days warm tender nights.

Location too makes the Algarve an attractive holiday destination two and a half hours from most airports and an easy arrival into Faro’s welcoming and uncomplicated arrival lounge. Once here most holiday destinations are less than an hour’s journey from the airport.

But this is only the tip of the iceberg that makes rural Algarve the perfect all year round holiday destination.

The Algarve’s calendar is dotted with fairs festivals and ‘festas’. The year starts with the elaborate New Year celebrations on the beaches of Portimo and Albufeira. February or March brings Carnival a three day celebration before the beginning of lent. There are parades all over the Algarve but Loul is the biggest of all. Each area has its own spring or summer fair. The Silves medieval fair in August is an outstanding event. Sponsored by the local council the whole town goes back to its medieval roots with snake charmers belly dancers pig roasts and jousting to name but a few of the spectacular events that run all week long. Portimo also celebrates in August as the humble sardine is enjoyed by thousands of fish lovers travelling many miles to this traditional event. Autumn events are often harvest related with dried fruit and nut displays in many areas. Autumn and winter also bring some spectacular music events often with free admission. If you have chosen to stay at a hotel or bed and breakfast on the Algarve yours hosts will be able to advise you on all local events .

One of the Algarve’s best kept secrets is its gastronomic delights. Portugal had a rich culinary heritage and the Portuguese people know their food and demand quality. Small cafes serve wonderful stews and grilled meals and fish. Seafood restaurants introduce you to a variety of shellfish unknown to most British and Irish people. And the delight is that the Portuguese just love to share all this with you. They will advise on food choice show you the meat or fish in its raw state suggest when a salad is needed or not and even liberate your cooked crab if you are not sure how to go about this operation. Again your guesthouse propritors are the best people to advise on loval restaurants.

Portuguese wines are finally being recognized for their excellence. Wines from the Alentaejo the region above the Algarve are the most popular on the Algarve although Algarve wine is growing in popularity and rightly so. If you want to choose from further afield there is the sensual Do or the unmistakable Bairrada. Let your waiter assist your selection their knowledge comes from being part of a tradition where good wine is appreciated. A totally different experience is the light slightly sparkling Vinho Verde that comes from the north of Portugal. This is excellent chilled on a warm summer evening. If you are more adventurous choose a Medronho a local liquor made with a type of wild strawberry that grows on trees in the hills of Monchique.

Take as long as you like over your meal then slowly make your way back to your beautiful Algarve accommodation knowing that in the peace and comfort of your rural setting you are guaranteed a good nights sleep.

Getting Away From It All

Posted by admin in Articles on 03 26th, 2011 | No Comments

Getting Away From It All

Iceland is a country roughly the size of Kentucky but with a lot fewer people. It is located a little below the Arctic Circle roughly between Greenland and the United Kingdom and about a 5hour flight from the East coast of the US. It has a population of just over three hundred thousand people which means that the population density is very low.

Population numbers and geography aside Iceland is an amazing country for many reasons though I dont think that its a country that is top of mind when it comes to vacation planning. Maybe thats what I liked about it. I live in a very crowded southern California city where traffic is always a problem and getting away from the crush of humanity ironically requires a lot of driving.

As many of you already know many of the worlds top tourist locations are being loved to death by the millions of visitors who come every year to see the sites walk up the same staircase in an old church or get a photo holding up the Leaning tower of Pisa. If you go to Paris or Rome or some of the other top European destinations you wait in lines you sit in traffic; hell if I wanted that I could just stay in California. I am not saying that visiting these famous cities is not worth it. I am saying that it is getting harder and harder to enjoy these cities and landmarks because everyone is visiting these cities and landmarks.

Of course everyones idea of fun is different. But for me going to a place where I could almost literally leave civilization behind sounded pretty good. I have read about Iceland and was taken by the exotic and unspoiled nature scenes. I wanted to be there in those pictures camping hiking exploring glaciers and high mountain meadows. Sound like a set up for disappointment? Turns out it wasnt.

Certainly there is always a difference between your imagination perception and reality. But I have to say that my experiences werent that far off from my perceptions. I traveled there in the late summer when the temperatures are decent mid 50s to low 60s F and the days are long real long. I did all the usual tourist stuff while I was in Reykjavik and then I booked a 5 day backpacking and trekking tour into the highlands of Iceland from Thorsmork to Landmannalaugur. Each day we hiked for 57 hours stopping along the way to learn about the history and geography of the various locations at nigh we slept in tents ate good food and played music or just talked about our days till sleep overcame us.

When I got back to Reykjavik I booked a jeep tour that took us right up onto a glacier called Langjokul the long glacier. This too was a real experience. Once we got to the top of the glacier we all got out of the jeep to look around and experience the surroundings. The two things that stuck with me about this were the silence and the amazing view from atop this glacier. I could see so far that I think I was seeing the curvature of the earth.

Iceland is a long way to go to get away from it all but allinall it was worth it. Though not a cheap destination the money I spent was small compared with the privilege of silence pristine nature and uncluttered vistas as far as my eyes could see.

If you are planning a trip and looking forthings to do in Iceland or some coolIceland tours I would recommend the glacier tours and backpacking tours. If you dont have the time and are looking for Iceland day tours I would recommend theIceland golden circle tour. David S. Brooks

Gdansk – Poland A City Of Growth And Expansion A Tourist City In Essence

Gdansk is the city where the first shot of World War II fired by Hitlers German forces from the Schleswig Holstein echoed around the world. The name was Danzig at the time and about 100000 residents perished in the battle between Germany and the Soviets who came to the rescue of Danzig in 1945. The ancient city nearly destroyed eventually fell under Polish rule and began to rise from the ashes with a new name Gdansk. The Gdansk shipyards became the battleground for the 1980 Solidarity revolution fought in Gdansk as the name Lech Walesa became a household name around the world.

Today Gdansk is a city of growth and expansion a tourist city with many hotels restaurants cafes bars nightclubs and shopping centers. Museums monuments art galleries concert halls and the Opera House are some of the places to visit in Gdansk. Entertainment sites across the city are enjoyable some nights and unappealing to some on other nights. Always check the type of entertainment in the bars and clubs each night before going to avoid undesirable offerings.

Buses are available for transport in the city and surrounding cities such as Sopot and Gdynia. Both cities form a triangle with Gdansk as sites to explore while visiting in Gdansk. There is no shortage of things to do and places to go and see in Gdansk. The city is like many cities of Eastern Europe a mix of the old and the modern and all filled with the romance of the past in the palaces and castles amidst ancient surroundings.

Game Reserves In Kenya: Mount Kenya National Park

Posted by admin in Articles on 03 20th, 2011 | No Comments

Game Reserves In Kenya: Mount Kenya National Park

Mount Kenya National Park is located in the Kenyan Highlands on the slopes of the mountain after which it is named. 150 kilometres North East of Nairobi Kenyas capital and just South of the Equator stands the once active volcano of Mt. Kenya. The Kenyan Highlands are covered in bamboo forests at the lower elevations giving way to scrub land on the higher slopes and finally becoming rocks snow and ice on the mountain peaks.

With its highest peak reaching a height of 5199 metres Mt. Kenya is Kenyas highest mountain and Africas second largest after Mt. Kilimanjaro. The Mount Kenya National Park circles the mountain making one of the most scenic Game Reserves in Kenya.

This is a popular mountain for climbers because the slopes are easier to scale than the intimidating Kilimanjaro. There are also many great hikes and walks in the foothills and the lower slopes. One of the attractions of Mt. Kenya is its anomalous permanent glaciers which are unexpected given its location almost straddling the equator and given the high temperatures of Africas equatorial climate in general.

No matter whether you attempt the peak or are content to pick your way through the rocks and glaciers on the lower slopes you will experience majestic views over one of Kenyas most beautiful national parks.

Lodges and clubs throughout the park specialise in assisting and guiding climbers. The best months for climbing are January/February and August/September. If you come from the lowlands it may take a few days to acclimatise to the higher elevation of the Mt. Kenya terrain.

Because of its location in the Highlands the park is home to game and mammals that have adapted to life at higher elevations. You may also be lucky enough to view some of the rare and endangered species that can only be found in this part of the Kenya Game Reserves system such as the bongo the largest of the forest antelope and the several a mediumsized cat.

There is also a wide variety of alpine and sub alpine flora to be found on the lower slopes where rainfall is plentiful. Come to Mt. Kenya to view the buffalo lion and leopard now rare. Here you will see some rare and unusual birds such as the purplethroated cuckoo and the redfronted parrot. You may also see a variety of raptors along with the very rare lammergeyer or bearded vulture.
